->Icare developed a fast and reliable test to evaluate the performance of surgical masks and filter masks. Filtration efficiency is assessed by measuring penetration into the filter media of a polydisperse aerosol. Six different particle sizes are measured in order to evaluate both the protection of the immediate environment of the wearer (role of a surgical mask), and the protection of the wearer vis-à-vis a contaminated environment (role of a filter mask against particles such as FFP2 or FFP3). In accordance with NF EN 14683 (2019) Medical Masks – Requirements and Test Method, the particle size of 3 µm was selected to assess the environmental protection performance. The expected level is a filtration efficiency greater than or equal to 98% (type II medical mask). In accordance with NF EN 149+A1 (2009) Respirators- Half-mask particulate filters – Requirements, tests, marking, the particle size of 0.3 µm has been chosen to assess the protection performance of the wearer. The expected level is a filtration efficiency greater than or equal to 99% (half-mask FFP3, paraffin oil test). The simultaneous measurement makes it possible in a single test to measure the protection efficiency in both directions.
